Based on a Webquest by Claire Lepine

This webquest is designed to introduce 9th grade students to the process of fossil formation and to how the fossil record supports the theory of evolution.

Introduction

Are humans descended from apes?

How did the dinosaurs die?

How do we know what people and animals looked like millions of years ago?

The answer to all of these questions lies in the science of paleontology. Paleontology is the study of fossils. In 1867, Charles Darwin found fossilized skeletons of aquatic animals in the South American mountains. Famously, his observations from these fossils gave rise to the Theory of Evolution. Today, modern biological technologies have affirmed Darwin's theory to such a degree that it is irrefutable.

In order to understand evolution, we are going to walk in Darwin's footsteps and undertake our own study of fossils on the web!
